Local Lifesavers Amongst Best in the State
(9/05/10)
The Inverloch Surf Life Saving Club has been recognised
as one of the best volunteer groups in the State at a presentation
held on Sunday May 9 2010.
Inverloch Surf Life Saving Club President, Philippe du Plessis
and young patrollers, Hilary Hughes and Luke Foster accepted a certificate
of recognition from the Premier, John Brumby and Minister for Community
Development Lily D'Ambrosia.
The Club was nominated for the 2010 Community Volunteering Achievement
Award (Regional) as a part of the prestigious Premiers Volunteering
Awards for its achievements, primarily its efforts in providing
invaluable public safety services from shipping containers while
still raising nearly $1.3 Million in order to commence the construction
of a much needed clubhouse at the Inverloch surf beach.
The Premiers Community Volunteering Awards promote and celebrate
the range and diversity of volunteering activities in Victoria,
including volunteering through community organisations as well as
community participation in less formal settings. They recognise
the wide range of community and personal benefits of volunteering
and community participation.
Philippe explained the Club made it to the final five in
the State. Unfortunately for us we were not judged at the best,
that honour went to the Willaura Community Development Group. He
added, all the finalist have made a fantastic contribution
to their local communities and like us are no doubt proud to have
been recognised as a state significant volunteer group.
Club representatives took the opportunity to update the Premier
and Minister on the progress of the construction of the clubhouse
which is starting to take shape at the surf beach car park with
the slab poured and brickwork progressing.
As a finalist, the Club received a framed certificate of recognition
and a cheque for $500. Philippe stated that the money will go towards
making up the shortfall of clubhouse funding, approximately $175,000.
He urged the local community and Club supporters to consider buying
a brick before June in order to take advantage of the Clubs
tax deductible status.
To buy a brick, call Philippe on 0429 002 219 or visit the clubs
website at www.islsc.org.au.
